New Operators, New Rules: Botswana’s Betting Market Expands
Botswana’s Gambling Authority (GA) has issued ten new bookmaker licenses as part of a plan to grow and tighten control over the country’s betting industry. Six licensees are already up and running, one has dropped out, and three more are preparing to launch.
The move was announced during the debut of BetXplosion, one of the new entrants. GA Board chairman Marvin Torto described the licensing drive as a key part of efforts to modernize oversight and create jobs. He stressed the regulator’s shift toward a more collaborative and efficient approach, noting efforts to streamline rules and set new national gambling standards.
Hundreds Hired, Thousands More Expected
The GA reports that over 400 jobs have been created through casinos and newly licensed bookmakers. Projections suggest that figure could rise to 2,300 as more outlets, including Limited Payout Machines (LPMs), open across the country.
But the GA isn’t ignoring the risks. Torto flagged concerns around underage gambling, excessive spending, and money laundering. All licensed platforms must implement strict age verification and access controls.
Call for AI to Monitor Risky Behavior
To better protect users and ensure compliance, the GA is encouraging operators to adopt advanced tech. Torto specifically called on BetXplosion to integrate AI systems that can spot erratic betting patterns, flag early signs of problem gambling, and trigger alerts for potential money laundering activity.
“AI can help operators detect and act on concerning behavior faster,” Torto said, urging operators to align with international standards in responsible gaming.
CSR, Research, and Responsible Growth
BetXplosion has committed to channeling at least 5% of its Gross Gambling Revenue into Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts each year. That funding will support youth programs, education, health campaigns, and sports. The GA will track these efforts through annual reporting and public feedback.
Meanwhile, a nationwide study is underway to assess how widespread gambling is, especially online. The findings will guide future policy decisions and help build stronger safeguards.
Botswana’s latest moves echo broader changes across global markets. Like Brazil, which recently issued 21 permanent betting licenses, Botswana is aiming to unlock economic gains while staying alert to the risks that come with a growing gambling sector.
