Rhode Island has joined the list of US states that could legalize online gaming with two new Bills recently put forward, courtesy of gaming operator Bally’s. Both pieces of legislation are seeking to allow online casino gaming and online poker in the Ocean State.
Rhode Island’s iGaming Market Could Launch in January 2024
SB948 and HB6348 were submitted respectively by Senate President Dominick Ruggerio and Rep. Gregory Constantino. Both lawmakers stated that the proposals were developed with the help and backing of Bally’s. The company is headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island, and controls land-based gambling in the state, operating two casino properties.
Online games that would be legalized under both Bills include online slots, online poker and table games. There was no mention of live dealer games. Both Bills seek to launch Rhode Island’s online gaming market on January 1, 2024.
Rhode Island Could Join MSIGA
SB948 and HB6348 would also authorize Rhode Island to participate in a multi-state online poker gaming compact, which would allow local players to compete with those in other states. This means Rhode Island could join MSIGA which presently covers four states – New Jersey, Nevada, Delaware, and Michigan.
Joining the MSIGA would greatly benefit the operators, players, and the state in general as it would bring in more revenue due to shared liquidity and bigger player pools. Players will also be able to compete for bigger prize pools.
However, Bally’s does not currently operate an online poker site, meaning it would take long for the state to participate in any multi-state online poker compact even if both Bills are ultimately approved into law.
