Thai authorities have seized more than US$12.3 million in assets and cash believed to be connected to an online gambling syndicate. Thailand’s Crime Suppression police raided a total of 52 locations in 10 provinces, resulting in the arrests of more than 40 individuals.
Gang Ran Illegal Gambling Sites
The syndicate, referred to by Thai police as a “gang”, was allegedly involved in running three online gambling websites that offered various types of gambling. The platforms had attracted more than 50,000 users who would transfer money to bank accounts linked with the gang. The funds were then immediately withdrawn and funneled to other accounts to conceal the illegal operation.
With illegal gambling becoming more prevalent in Thailand where casinos are currently prohibited, some politicians are pushing for the legalization of both land-based and online gambling. Proponents believe such move could help combat unregulated gambling in the country.
Thai Parliamentary Committee Supports Casino Legalization
Back in July, a parliamentary committee put forward a proposal that seeks to allow the operation of “entertainment complexes”, including casinos, across the country. It is aimed at boosting Thailand’s tourism and generating much-needed revenue for the country’s economic recovery following the pandemic. Whether the proposal will be successful remains to be seen.
