The Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Netherlands gambling regulator, observed in its Market Scan 2022 that the launch of online gambling sites has impacted land-based casinos in the country.
The market scan highlights that the distribution of the Dutch gambling market has changed significantly, with online gambling contributing 31% of the total GGR and land-based gambling contributing 69%.
The 2022 Market Scan tracks the performance of the Dutch gambling market to enable Dutch authorities to interpret the financial results of its regulated online gambling industry, launched on October 1, 2021.
The scan reveals that the licensed Dutch gambling market recorded €3.4 billion in gross gambling revenue (GGR), reflecting an 85% increase compared to the €2 billion GGR of 2021.
Breaking down the Dutch gambling market by vertical, online casino games generated 23% of the market share with its €1.9 billion GGR.
After the Netherlands legalized online gambling in the autumn of 2021, casino game GGR (land-based and online) increased from €1.5 billion (2019) to €1.9 billion (2022), while the land-based sector declined by 30%.
The market scan also reveals that an average adult in the Netherlands spent €258 in 2022, significantly more than the €158 in 2021 and the €221 in 2019.
