A national anti-gambling group is set to launch a legal challenge against a new law that allows daily fantasy sports (DFS) in New York State.
Although State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman banned DFS in New York last year, the prohibition came to an end when Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a law to legalize contests, set taxes and create a new licensed system earlier this month.
Despite the fact that the law has been passed and operators which include FanDuel and DraftKings have already applied for licenses, it is possible that opponents of the sector will launch a legal challenge.
According to a statement in the Buffalo News newspaper, the national director of Stop Predatory Gambling, Les Bernal, has revealed that his group is considering ways to overturn the law.
Bernal stated that they believe in improving the lives of New Yorkers, and that part of that mission is to repeal the state’s predatory gambling policies, and litigation is part of that effort.
Bernal went on to say that they are definitely advanced in this process but they are not in a position to reveal when it will be filed. He added that anyone investing in these businesses should really keep their hands in their pockets for the near future.
Bernal also said that there is no single act of New York State government that creates more inequality of opportunity than its sponsorship of predatory gambling and that what state government is trying to do is force predatory gambling into every home and smart phone in the state as a result of a push by very powerful gambling interests.
