Michigan’s online gambling market kept up its hot streak in August, delivering $312.5m in gross receipts from iGaming and sports betting. According to the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), that’s up nearly 40% compared to last year and 9.8% higher than July.
iGaming Leads the Charge
Online casino games continued to be the backbone of the market, pulling in $263.3m in gross receipts. That’s up 34% year-on-year and 5% from July. Sports betting revenue told a slightly different story, dipping month-to-month but still surging 67.5% compared to last year, reaching $49.2m.
For everyday players, this signals a competitive environment where operators are pushing more online slots, table games, and live dealer options to keep customers engaged. Caesars Entertainment, for example, recently launched its own branded live dealer studio in Michigan, adding another option for fans of interactive play.
Sports Betting Handle Jumps Ahead of Football Season
Bettors placed $338.9m in online sports wagers during August, a 21% rise over last year and nearly 20% higher than July. With football season looming, the handle bump suggests Michigan players are already ramping up their bets.
Adjusted gross receipts came in at $281.4m, with iGaming contributing $247.2m and sports betting adding $34.2m.
Taxes and Operator Payments
The state reaped $53.7m in taxes, mostly from iGaming. Detroit’s three casinos — MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown — contributed $13.8m in wagering taxes and service fees, while tribal operators paid $6.2m to their governing bodies, a 35% increase from last year.
Enforcement Against Illegal Operators
In mid-August, regulators issued cease-and-desist orders to 15 unlicensed operators, including 7 Bit Casino, Grande Vegas Casino, and Sun Palace Casino. For Michigan players, this move is meant to steer traffic toward regulated platforms, ensuring fair play and guaranteed payouts.
