Daily fantasy sports (DFS) operator FanDuel has revealed that it has closed its operations in the UK market.
FanDuel confirmed its decision to exit the UK market by informing its players by email and also via a posting on its official Twitter account.
The operator commented in a message on its website that it hoped to return to the United Kingdom “in the future”. However, the daily fantasy sports operator did not officially disclose the reasons behind the move.
It has been ascertained that players who still have funds left in their account will have their balance credited to their most recent bank card after which they will receive an email confirming the payment.
FanDuel revealed that an amount of almost £1 million was won by fantasy football enthusiasts in the United Kingdom and thanked the many enthusiasts for their support. It also went on to say that unfortunately, they will not be offering any contests this season but that they are hoping to be back in the future.
Last month saw DraftKings and FanDuel scrapping their merger plans after initial proposals were rejected by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
The FTC estimated that the pair held 90% of the market in the US which raised concerns over the impact that the deal could have on competition.
Nigel Eccles, Chief Executive Officer at FanDuel, thereafter determined that it would be in the best interest of their shareholders, customers, employees and partners to terminate the merger agreement and move forward as an independent company.
