Macau Casino Revenue Falls 8.4% as World Cup Pulls Players Away

Macau’s casinos collected MOP20.3 billion in July, with football, weaker premium play and travel disruption offsetting a solid improvement from June.

Football Wins the Fight for Attention

Macau casino gross gaming revenue reached MOP20.3 billion, or about US$2.51 billion, in July 2026. That was 8.4% lower than in July last year, according to figures from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau. The result still beat June’s MOP18.52 billion total by 9.4%, offering operators at least one reason to keep the champagne on ice rather than put it back in storage.

The FIFA World Cup appears to have been the biggest distraction. The tournament ran for 39 days, included 104 matches and ended on July 19. Sands China and MGM China both reported softer premium gaming volumes during the competition as some customers shifted their attention and spending toward football.

Recovery Starts Before the Final Whistle

Trading conditions began to improve as the tournament approached its final stages. Citi estimated that Macau’s daily gaming revenue rose by roughly 9% during the second full week of July compared with the week beginning July 6.

MGM Resorts International CEO Bill Hornbuckle also said demand had started recovering before the World Cup final. Analysts expect Macau’s coming schedule of concerts and entertainment events to help bring more visitors back to casino floors over the next few months.

Seven-Month Total Remains in the Black

July’s annual decline did not wipe out Macau’s gains for 2026. Casino revenue for the first seven months of the year reached MOP147.2 billion, around US$18.2 billion, up 4.4% from the same period in 2025.

That longer view paints a healthier picture than the July headline alone. The World Cup may have borrowed a chunk of casino spending, but the market is still ahead for the year.

Storms Add More Travel Friction

Football was not the only obstacle. Two typhoons affected Macau during July, although authorities raised only the No.3 storm signal rather than the more disruptive No.8 warning.

The second storm interrupted flights, ferry services and travel links connecting Macau with Hong Kong and parts of Guangdong province. Those disruptions made it harder for some visitors to reach the city at a time when casino demand was already under pressure.

Economic Growth Slows to a Crawl

Macau’s economy expanded by just 0.3% year on year during the second quarter, down sharply from 7.1% growth in the opening three months of 2026. Second-quarter economic output totaled MOP102.33 billion, or about US$12.7 billion.

Across the first half, real GDP grew 3.7% to MOP209.89 billion. Service exports climbed 7.2%, helped by a 9% rise in visitor arrivals, while private consumption increased 2.8%. First-half output remained at 89.1% of the level recorded during the same period in 2019.

What the Numbers Mean for Players

For regular casino players, July’s report does not point to any change in game rules or odds. It shows how quickly major sporting events can redirect entertainment budgets, even in the world’s largest casino market.

With the World Cup finished and more live events on Macau’s calendar, casino operators will now try to turn returning foot traffic into stronger gaming spend. July was a stumble, not yet a change in direction.
